Compatible SWEP B12MT Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger Replacement

A compatible SWEP B12MT replacement can be a practical solution when an existing brazed plate heat exchanger needs to be replaced but the original unit has a long delivery time or the project requires faster technical support.

In one recent replacement project, SENOVIS supported the customer from model identification and dimensional verification through technical drawing confirmation, production planning, and final order approval.

The original unit was a SWEP B12MT series brazed plate heat exchanger. Instead of selecting a replacement only by model name, we reviewed the nameplate information, plate quantity, connection arrangement, overall dimensions, and installation requirements before preparing the compatible solution.

This is particularly important for a SWEP heat exchanger replacement because two units that appear similar in capacity may still have different port positions, connection sizes, plate configurations, or mounting dimensions.

The replacement supplied by SENOVIS is a compatible non-OEM product and is not an original SWEP product. SWEP and related model names are used only for identification and compatibility reference.

Customer Requirement for a SWEP B12MT Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger Replacement

The project started with a request to replace an existing SWEP B12MTx30 brazed plate heat exchanger. The customer provided the original model information and physical dimensions from the installed unit so that the replacement could be evaluated before production.

The requirement was for four units, and the existing heat exchanger used a 30-plate configuration.

For this type of project, simply searching for a SWEP B12 heat exchanger or another B12 series product is usually not enough. The detailed configuration after the main model designation can affect the actual construction.

For example, the B12 family may include configurations such as B12MTx20, B12MTx30, B12MTx40, B12MTx50, B12MTx60, and B12MTx70.

A 20-plate brazed plate heat exchanger and a 30-plate version may belong to the same product family while having different overall thicknesses, heat transfer areas, and thermal performance.

The same applies when comparing a 40-plate heat exchanger, 50-plate heat exchanger, 60-plate heat exchanger, or 70-plate heat exchanger.

For this reason, SENOVIS confirms the actual configuration instead of recommending a replacement only according to the basic B12 model name.

In this project, the customer’s priority was not simply obtaining a similar SWEP BPHE. The replacement also needed to be checked against the existing installation space and connection arrangement.

Why Connection Dimensions Matter in a SWEP Plate Heat Exchanger Replacement

Connection dimensions are one of the most important factors when replacing a SWEP plate heat exchanger.

A brazed plate heat exchanger is often installed inside compact refrigeration, HVAC, process cooling, or industrial equipment where available piping space is limited.

Even a relatively small difference in the distance between the four ports can require changes to the existing pipework.

For this reason, our technical confirmation normally focuses on:

  • Overall length and width
  • Connection center distances
  • Port size
  • Port orientation
  • Overall plate pack thickness
  • Mounting and installation arrangement

During this project, the customer supplied measurements from the existing unit. These measurements were compared with the proposed replacement drawing before production was finalized.

This dimensional verification is especially important when purchasing a compatible brazed heat exchanger rather than an original unit.

A replacement may provide suitable thermal performance while still having slightly different external dimensions. If this is identified before production, the customer can determine whether the unit can be installed directly or whether a minor piping adjustment is required.

This process helps reduce one of the most common risks in replacement projects: receiving a heat exchanger that meets the thermal requirement but cannot be installed conveniently at the site.

Comparing the Original SWEP B12 With a Compatible Brazed PHE

The purpose of a compatible brazed PHE is not necessarily to reproduce every external detail of the original unit.

The more important objective is to provide a technically suitable replacement based on the customer’s operating and installation requirements.

For a SWEP B12 replacement project, SENOVIS normally evaluates three main areas.

The first is mechanical compatibility. We compare overall dimensions, four connection positions, connection standards, and available installation space.

The second is thermal configuration. Plate quantity, plate pattern, effective heat transfer area, flow arrangement, and application conditions can all influence performance.

The third is material and pressure requirements. These determine whether the selected BPHE is suitable for the customer’s medium and operating conditions.

For the B12MTx30 project, the technical reference was based on a 30-plate configuration using stainless steel plates with copper brazing.

The reference configuration had a heat transfer area of approximately 0.812 m² and a maximum flow rate of approximately 16.9 m³/h.

These figures are useful during model comparison, but they should not be treated as the only selection criteria.

For a new application, operating temperature, inlet and outlet temperatures, flow rate, pressure drop, fluid type, design pressure, and required heat duty should also be considered.

Replacing an existing SWEP B12MT based on verified model information is therefore different from selecting a new brazed plate heat exchanger solely from operating conditions.

Technical Drawing Confirmation for a Compatible SWEP BPHE Before Production

Technical drawing approval was an important part of this project.

After the proposed configuration was prepared, we issued a drawing showing the main dimensions and connection arrangement for customer review.

The customer then checked the drawing against the existing installation and requested clarification regarding one of the marked dimensions.

This type of communication allows technical questions to be resolved before production starts.

For compatible SWEP BPHE replacement projects, our normal workflow is to confirm the model first and then review the available nameplate, photos, dimensions, connection information, plate quantity, and operating conditions.

A production drawing can then be prepared for final confirmation when required.

Once the drawing is approved, production can proceed according to the confirmed specification.

This procedure is particularly useful for B12 series units because online searches may return many similar configurations, including SWEP B12MTx20, B12MTx30, B12MTx40, and B12MTx50.

The basic model family alone cannot confirm every physical detail of a specific installed unit.

For this reason, we recommend providing the existing nameplate and, where possible, measuring the connection center distances before ordering a compatible replacement.

Stainless Steel Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger Materials and Technical Specifications

The project used a typical stainless steel brazed plate heat exchanger construction with stainless steel heat transfer plates and copper brazing.

For many BPHE applications, 316 or 316L stainless steel can provide suitable corrosion resistance for water, glycol, HVAC, refrigeration, and industrial cooling applications.

Copper brazing creates a compact permanent connection between the plates and eliminates the need for replaceable gaskets.

This is one reason a brazed plate heat exchanger (BPHE) can provide a relatively large heat transfer area within a compact footprint.

Compared with a gasketed plate-and-frame heat exchanger, a brazed unit does not require a large frame or tightening bolts. The plate pack is permanently brazed together, resulting in a compact and relatively lightweight exchanger.

Depending on the operating conditions, this construction can be used as a:

  • Refrigeration plate heat exchanger
  • Evaporator
  • Liquid-to-liquid heat exchanger
  • Heat recovery exchanger
  • HVAC heat exchanger
  • Industrial cooling heat exchanger

However, material compatibility must always be checked.

Copper-brazed heat exchangers are not suitable for every medium, and the final selection should consider temperature, pressure, fluid chemistry, chloride concentration, refrigerant type, and actual service conditions.

Compatible SWEP Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger With a Shorter Production Lead Time

Lead time was another important consideration in this project.

The customer indicated that the delivery time for the original replacement was approximately four months.

For an operating cooling or industrial system, this can create a significant maintenance challenge, especially when the existing exchanger is approaching the end of its service life.

The compatible solution was planned with an estimated production period of approximately 30 days after technical and commercial confirmation.

This shorter lead time was one of the main reasons the customer proceeded with the compatible SWEP brazed plate heat exchanger replacement solution.

However, shorter delivery time should not come at the expense of dimensional verification.

A fast shipment has little value if the heat exchanger cannot be connected correctly after arrival.

For this reason, the project combined shorter production planning with technical drawing approval before manufacturing.

The commercial process progressed through:

Technical confirmation → quotation → drawing review → purchase order → proforma invoice → deposit payment → production

This also demonstrates one advantage of working directly with experienced brazed plate heat exchanger manufacturers: technical and commercial questions can be handled together rather than treating the exchanger simply as a standard catalogue item.

For urgent replacement projects, customers can provide the existing heat exchanger model, nameplate, photos, connection dimensions, and required quantity.

SENOVIS can then check whether a compatible replacement is available and provide a preliminary production schedule.

How SENOVIS Supports Industrial Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger Replacement Projects

SENOVIS supports replacement projects for industrial brazed plate heat exchangers, gasketed plate heat exchangers, and related PHE spare parts.

For a SWEP B12 series replacement, the most useful information normally includes:

  • Complete model number
  • Nameplate photo
  • Plate quantity
  • Four port connections
  • Overall dimensions
  • Connection center distances
  • Plate material
  • Brazing material
  • Design pressure
  • Operating temperature
  • Fluid or refrigerant
  • Required quantity

If the customer only has the existing exchanger available, photos of the nameplate and front face can also help with the initial identification.

Our replacement process focuses on reducing uncertainty before production.

The proposed exchanger is checked according to the information supplied by the customer, a technical drawing can be provided when required, and production proceeds after the main specifications have been confirmed.

For customers comparing SWEP B12, SWEP B12MT, or related B12 configurations, the model number should be treated as the starting point rather than the complete technical specification.

Plate quantity and suffix information can significantly affect the final configuration.

This project is a good example. The customer’s requirement was not simply “a B12 heat exchanger.” It was a specific SWEP B12MTx30 replacement requiring dimensional review, technical drawing approval, suitable materials, a defined plate configuration, and a practical production lead time.

If you need a compatible replacement for a SWEP B12MT, SWEP B12, or another BHE heat exchanger, send us the existing model number, nameplate photo, quantity, connection dimensions, and operating conditions.

SENOVIS can help check the configuration and prepare a compatible non-OEM replacement proposal before production.
