A typical stainless steel brazed plate heat exchanger consists of corrugated stainless steel plates permanently joined through a brazing process. Copper-brazed constructions are widely used for many standard duties, while other brazing technologies or material combinations may be required where the operating medium is incompatible with copper.
The important selection inputs include heat load, inlet and outlet temperatures, flow rates, refrigerant or liquid type, working pressure, design pressure, connection size, allowable pressure drop, and fouling tendency.
Because a BPHE cannot normally be opened and re-gasketed like a gasketed plate heat exchanger, thermal sizing and media compatibility should be carefully verified before production.
