Installation and Maintenance Guidelines for the AC540 in Chiller Systems
When used in chiller systems, the AC540 brazed plate heat exchanger requires proper system installation rather than complex maintenance. Long-term reliability depends on correct water quality management, flow direction, pressure drop control, freeze protection, and adequate service access. Although brazed plate heat exchangers are considered low-maintenance components, their performance still relies on proper installation and system management.
Installation Considerations
The AC540 can be installed as either an evaporator or a condenser in chiller systems. Before installation, confirm the intended operating duty and ensure the heat exchanger is installed according to the specified flow direction.
Its asymmetric channel design and integrated refrigerant distribution system are optimized for a designated flow path. Reversing the connections may reduce refrigerant distribution efficiency and increase pressure drop.
Although the AC540 can support high flow rates in properly designed systems, the actual operating flow should always follow the equipment design specifications and approved selection data.
Operating Considerations
The AC540 is designed with low refrigerant charge, low water side pressure drop, and high heat transfer efficiency. During operation, regularly monitor differential pressure, inlet and outlet temperatures, and any signs of frost formation or ice blockage.
When operating as an evaporator, freeze protection is particularly important. While the dual-circuit design helps improve freeze resistance, it does not eliminate the need for proper flow control and low-temperature protection.
Water pumps, flow switches, and freeze protection controls should be properly interlocked to prevent compressor operation under insufficient water flow conditions.
Water Quality and System Cleanliness
As a gasket-free brazed plate heat exchanger, the AC540 requires relatively little routine maintenance when the system is properly maintained.
Both chilled water and cooling water circuits should remain clean and be equipped with suitable filters to prevent debris from entering the heat exchanger. Good water quality helps maintain stable heat transfer performance and reduces the risk of internal blockage.
If fouling is suspected, inspect filters, bypass circuits, and system cleanliness before considering maintenance on the heat exchanger itself.
Shutdown and Freeze Protection
When the system is shut down during cold weather, the evaporator side should be protected against freezing. If necessary, drain the water circuit or apply an appropriate antifreeze solution.
For long-term shutdowns, avoid leaving stagnant water inside the heat exchanger under freezing conditions, as ice expansion may damage the brazed plates or joints.
Although the AC540 incorporates features that improve freeze resistance, reliable freeze protection ultimately depends on proper control strategies, adequate flow, and correct shutdown procedures.
Routine Maintenance
Routine maintenance should focus on monitoring differential pressure, temperature difference, and system operating trends rather than frequent disassembly.
If heat transfer performance decreases, first inspect filters, pump operation, valve positions, and water quality before determining whether chemical cleaning or system maintenance is required.
Regular inspection of operating pressure, temperature, and any signs of leakage is recommended to ensure the heat exchanger continues operating within its intended design conditions.
Practical Installation Tips
When installing the AC540 in water-cooled screw chillers or centrifugal chillers, allow sufficient service clearance around the heat exchanger for future inspection, piping maintenance, and system flushing.
During commissioning, verify flow direction, vent all trapped air, confirm filter condition, check pump rotation, and test freeze protection controls before starting the c
