The AC900 / ACH900 is a high capacity Industrial Plate Heat Exchanger for demanding commercial and industrial thermal applications.

As a Single circuit brazed PHE Cooling System exchanger, it is designed to provide efficient heat transfer in systems requiring high cooling or heating capacity.

The AC900 PHE Evaporator is widely selected for OEM manufacturing, equipment replacement, and large scale HVAC and refrigeration projects.

Brazed PHE Exchanger is commonly used in air conditioning and heat pump solutions, including chillers, industrial process cooling, and district energy systems.

Compared with the Alfa Laval AC16 / ACH16 / ACK16, the AC900 PHE Type Heat Exchanger is better suited for applications requiring significantly higher heat transfer capacity and larger system performance.

AC900 vs. Shell-and-Tube Heat Exchangers

The AC900 brazed plate heat exchanger gives you a smaller footprint, better heat transfer efficiency, and less refrigerant charge than a comparable shell-and-tube unit. The trade-off: it runs a higher pressure drop and wants cleaner fluid to perform well. Which one’s right depends on what your system actually needs to handle.

What the AC900 Is Built For

It’s a single-circuit brazed plate exchanger aimed at refrigeration, AC, and heat pump duty. The whole point of the brazed plate format is packing more heat transfer surface into less space — so where installation room is tight, it’s usually the first thing engineers reach for.

Shell-and-tube goes the other direction: a tube bundle inside a shell, built for industrial jobs where temperatures run hotter, pressures run higher, or the process fluid is more demanding than a typical HVAC loop.

Why the AC900 Performs Well

The narrow plate channels force strong turbulence in the fluid, which is exactly what drives efficient heat transfer and a tight temperature approach. That same geometry is also why refrigerant charge and overall unit size stay low — a real advantage in equipment where every liter of refrigerant and every inch of cabinet space matters.

The catch is those same narrow channels. They push pressure drop higher than what you’d see in a shell-and-tube design, and they don’t tolerate dirty or unfiltered fluid well. Clean water or properly conditioned heat transfer fluid is basically a requirement, not a suggestion.

Where Each One Gets Used

The AC900 shows up constantly in screw chillers, industrial refrigeration packages, commercial heat pumps, and other HVAC equipment where compact size and low refrigerant charge are part of the spec sheet.

Shell-and-tube still wins out when the fluid isn’t clean, when temperatures or pressures push past what a brazed plate unit is rated for, or when the application just needs the mechanical toughness that a tube bundle offers.

Making the Call

If your priority list is compact size, thermal efficiency, and minimal refrigerant charge, the AC900 is a strong fit for most standard chiller and heat pump work. If you’re dealing with contaminated media, harsh operating conditions, or pressure drop is the thing you can’t compromise on, shell-and-tube is probably the safer bet.

Bottom line: for typical refrigeration and heat pump systems, the AC900 hits a good balance across size, efficiency, and performance. Once conditions get more extreme or the fluid gets dirtier, it’s worth weighing whether shell-and-tube makes more sense for your specific job.
