Why Plate Identification Must Come Before Price Confirmation

One of the most common mistakes in replacement plate purchasing is requesting a quotation based only on the heat exchanger brand.

A manufacturer may use several plate types in equipment with similar frame sizes. Even plates that appear almost identical may have differences in:

  • Overall plate length and width
  • Port diameter and port center distance
  • Upper and lower hanging structures
  • Gasket groove design
  • Corrugation depth and angle
  • Plate thickness
  • Hole opening arrangement
  • Start plate, channel plate, and end plate configuration

For this reason, we do not recommend confirming compatibility based only on a general description such as “plate for an M10 heat exchanger” or “replacement plate for a GEA unit.”

A complete model number, nameplate, drawing, or clear plate photograph provides a much more reliable basis for technical confirmation.

Information We Normally Request from Customers

Based on the RFQs and maintenance inquiries we receive, the following information is the most useful for identifying replacement PHE plates.

Heat Exchanger Nameplate

The equipment nameplate may show:

  • Manufacturer
  • Heat exchanger model
  • Serial number
  • Design pressure
  • Test pressure
  • Design temperature
  • Plate quantity
  • Year of manufacture

The serial number does not always directly identify the plate type, but it helps separate different units and avoid mixing specifications when a customer operates several heat exchangers.

Existing Plate Photographs

Customers should provide a complete front view of the plate rather than only a close-up photograph.

Useful photographs include:

  • Full plate shape
  • Upper hanging area
  • Lower guiding area
  • Port corners
  • Gasket groove
  • Corrugation pattern
  • Plate stamping or model marking

A photograph with a tape measure or ruler is especially useful when the original plate number is unclear.

Plate Dimensions

When no reliable model number is available, we normally request:

  • Overall length
  • Overall width
  • Port diameter
  • Horizontal port center distance
  • Vertical port center distance
  • Plate thickness

Measurements should be taken from the metal plate itself, not from the gasket edge.

Material and Thickness

Common material requests include:

  • AISI 304 stainless steel
  • AISI 316L stainless steel
  • Titanium
  • Nickel or other special alloys

Common plate thicknesses include 0.4 mm, 0.5 mm, 0.6 mm, and 0.7 mm, depending on the plate model and operating conditions.

Material and thickness should not be selected only according to the lowest price. Fluid composition, chloride concentration, operating temperature, pressure, corrosion history, and cleaning chemicals should also be considered.

What We Check with the Factory Before Quotation

Stock confirmation involves more than asking whether a plate model is available.

When reviewing a customer requirement with the factory, we may need to confirm:

  1. Whether the requested plate model is currently in stock
  2. Whether the stock material matches the customer’s specification
  3. Whether the required thickness is available
  4. Whether high-theta and low-theta patterns are both required
  5. Whether the order includes start plates, channel plates, or end plates
  6. Whether gaskets need to be installed or supplied separately
  7. Whether additional production is required
  8. Whether the requested quantity can be supplied within the required lead time
  9. How the plates should be packed for air, courier, or sea transport
  10. The estimated net weight, gross weight, package size, and volume

This process is particularly important for urgent maintenance orders. A plate may be described as a commonly stocked model, but the exact material, thickness, or hole arrangement may still require production.

For transparency, stock status and lead time should always be reconfirmed for each order.

In-Stock Plates for Urgent Heat Exchanger Maintenance

Unexpected leakage, corrosion, deformation, or gasket failure can stop a heat exchanger and affect an entire production line.

Customers requesting urgent spare parts often need one of the following solutions:

Replacement of Several Damaged Plates

When only a small number of plates have pinholes, cracks, damaged gasket grooves, or severe corrosion, individual plates may be replaced.

However, the new plates must be installed in the correct sequence. Replacing a high-theta plate with a low-theta plate, or using the wrong hole opening arrangement, can change the flow path and pressure drop.

Replacement of a Complete Plate Pack

A complete plate pack may be more appropriate when:

  • Many plates are corroded or deformed
  • The existing plates have reached the end of their practical service life
  • Heat transfer performance remains poor after cleaning
  • Repeated internal leakage occurs
  • The customer wants to retain the frame but renew the heat transfer section

When quoting a complete plate pack, we need to confirm whether the stated quantity includes the start plate and end plate, and whether the customer requires gaskets for every channel plate.

Maintenance Inventory for Future Repairs

Some customers purchase additional plates and gaskets for on-site maintenance stock.

This approach can be useful for:

  • Marine vessels
  • Refrigeration plants
  • District cooling systems
  • Food processing facilities
  • Chemical production lines
  • Power plants
  • Remote industrial sites

For critical equipment, keeping a limited quantity of verified spare plates can reduce future downtime.

Plate Material Selection Based on Operating Conditions

Choosing the correct material is a technical decision rather than a purely commercial one.

Stainless Steel PHE Plates

AISI 304 and AISI 316L are widely used for water, HVAC, food processing, general cooling, and industrial heat recovery applications.

AISI 316L generally offers better corrosion resistance than AISI 304, but it is not automatically suitable for every chloride-containing fluid.

Titanium Heat Exchanger Plates

Titanium is commonly considered for seawater, saltwater, swimming pool systems, and applications with elevated chloride levels.

However, the complete operating data should still be reviewed. Fluid concentration, temperature, contamination, and cleaning chemicals may influence material selection.

Special Alloy Plates

Nickel and other corrosion-resistant alloys may be required for specific chemical processes.

When the medium is aggressive or unusual, customers should provide a fluid analysis or material specification rather than relying only on the material used in another installation.

Plate Thickness Is Not Interchangeable in Every Application

Customers sometimes ask whether a thinner plate can be used to reduce cost or whether a thicker plate will always provide better service life.

The answer depends on the equipment design and operating conditions.

Plate thickness affects:

  • Heat transfer resistance
  • Plate flexibility
  • Forming accuracy
  • Pressure resistance
  • Corrosion allowance
  • Plate pack tightening length

Changing the thickness may also change the total compressed plate pack dimension. This is particularly relevant when replacing a large number of plates in an existing frame.

We therefore recommend following the original specification unless a technical review supports a change.

High-Theta and Low-Theta Plate Arrangement

Many gasketed plate heat exchangers use different corrugation angles to balance heat transfer performance and pressure drop.

A high-theta plate generally creates stronger turbulence and higher heat transfer, but it may also result in a higher pressure drop. A low-theta plate generally provides lower resistance.

A plate pack may contain:

  • High-theta plates
  • Low-theta plates
  • A mixed arrangement
  • Plates with different hole opening combinations

For a complete plate pack order, the required arrangement should be confirmed from the original plate sequence, technical drawing, or operating calculation.

Supplying the correct plate shape but the wrong thermal pattern may result in a heat exchanger that physically fits but does not perform as required.

What We Inspect Before Shipment

Before preparing an order for dispatch, the plate specification should be checked against the confirmed quotation and customer information.

Typical inspection items include:

  • Plate model
  • Overall dimensions
  • Port diameter
  • Hole opening arrangement
  • Material grade
  • Plate thickness
  • Corrugation pattern
  • Surface condition
  • Quantity
  • Gasket requirement
  • Packing labels

When several plate types are included in one order, separate labels can help the customer identify each model after arrival.

For customer convenience, the packing list may also show the plate quantity, gasket quantity, package count, net weight, gross weight, and dimensions.

Packaging Replacement Plates for Export

Heat exchanger plates are relatively thin and can be damaged if they move, bend, or receive concentrated impact during transport.

Depending on plate size and order quantity, export packing may include:

  • Protective film or moisture-resistant wrapping
  • Reinforced cartons
  • Wooden pallets
  • Export plywood cases
  • Internal supports
  • Straps to prevent plate movement
  • Separate packaging for gaskets

Plates and gaskets are often packed separately inside the shipment because heavy plates can deform or compress the sealing elements during transportation.

For large plates or bulk orders, the final package dimensions and gross weight should be confirmed after the actual packing arrangement is completed.

Shipping Options for Urgent and Regular Orders

The appropriate transportation method depends on plate dimensions, total weight, urgency, and destination.

Courier or Express Delivery

Courier services may be suitable for small quantities and relatively compact plates. Large industrial plates may exceed courier size limits even when the total weight is not high.

Air Freight

Air freight is often selected for urgent shutdown maintenance. However, chargeable weight may be based on either actual weight or volumetric weight.

Customers should consider both freight cost and airport handling requirements.

Sea Freight

Sea freight may be more economical for large plate packs, multiple models, or regular spare parts inventory.

For small sea freight shipments, local port charges can represent a significant portion of the total logistics cost. The Incoterm and nominated forwarder should therefore be confirmed before shipment.

Experience from Daily Customer RFQs

In practical quotation work, customer requirements are rarely limited to a model name and quantity.

Customers may also request:

  • Reference to an RFQ or purchase order number
  • Material certificates
  • Country of origin information
  • HS code confirmation
  • Estimated packing weight and dimensions
  • A specific Incoterm
  • Delivery to a nominated warehouse or forwarder
  • Separate packing for each heat exchanger unit
  • Technical drawings or product photographs
  • Confirmation that the parts are compatible replacements
  • Replacement support if identification or manufacturing errors cause incompatibility

These commercial details are important, but they should not replace technical verification.

A quotation can list the correct price, quantity, and delivery term while still being unsuitable if the plate model or configuration has not been accurately confirmed.
