Alfa Laval AC65 / ACH65 Installation Notes

The AC65/ACH65 is a common choice for evaporators and condensers in residential and commercial heat pump systems. Getting the installation right matters more than people think a heat exchanger that’s correctly sized on paper can still underperform badly if the piping around it is wrong.

Orientation and Flow Direction

Always follow the port orientation and flow direction shown in the manual don’t guess based on how it looks like it should connect. Reversing the flow path, especially on the evaporator side, throws off refrigerant distribution and drops heat transfer efficiency, sometimes significantly.

If you’re running multiple units in parallel, keep the piping symmetrical on both sides. Asymmetric piping is one of the most common causes of uneven flow between parallel exchangers one unit ends up doing more work than the others, and you get inconsistent performance that’s hard to diagnose later.

Flow Rate and Pressure Drop

Stay within the designed flow range. Run it too low and you’ll see the evaporating temperature drop, COP suffer, and heat transfer become unstable — sometimes with audible flow noise as a warning sign.

When you’re calculating system pressure drop, don’t just look at the heat exchanger spec sheet. Pumps, filters, check valves, solenoid valves — they all add up, and skipping this step is a common reason systems come in underperforming after commissioning.

Keep the System Clean

Brazed plates don’t tolerate debris well the channels are narrow, and once something lodges in there, it’s not coming out easily. Flush the piping thoroughly before commissioning to clear welding slag, metal shavings, and general construction debris.

A filter installed just ahead of the heat exchanger is cheap insurance against blockage. Skipping it is a false economy.

Freeze Protection and Air Venting

If it’s running as an evaporator, make sure freeze protection is in place for shutdown periods or low-temperature conditions a frozen plate exchanger is an expensive mistake.

Don’t forget air venting on the water/glycol side. Trapped air causes flow instability, hurts heat transfer, and is a common source of the knocking or gurgling noise customers complain about post-installation.

Support and Vibration

The AC65 is compact, but that doesn’t mean it can carry piping weight or stress on its ports. Support the piping independently so the connections aren’t taking the load.

Where there’s compressor pulsation, pump vibration, or thermal expansion in play, use flexible connectors and properly placed supports. This isn’t optional in systems with reciprocating compressors , the fatigue stress on brazed joints adds up over time.

Before You Start Up, Check:

  • Flow direction matches the design
  • Valves are in the correct position
  • Filters are installed
  • Piping has been flushed and cleaned
  • Air has been fully vented
  • Pressure testing is complete and passed
  • Insulation is in place where specified

For systems using R290 or other flammable refrigerants, leak detection, ventilation, and electrical safety need to meet local code and system-specific safety requirements — this isn’t something to shortcut regardless of installer experience level.
