DESCRIPTION
For compact heating and cooling systems, the Alfa Laval CB14 brazed plate heat exchanger is widely used in boilers, heat pumps, chillers, and domestic hot water applications. Its compact structure, fast heat transfer performance, and stable operation make it a common choice for both OEM equipment manufacturers and replacement projects.
The CB14 series includes multiple plate configurations such as CB14-10H, CB14-14H, CB14-20H, and CB14-30H, allowing engineers and buyers to select different heat transfer capacities based on flow rate and operating conditions. Compared with larger industrial plate heat exchangers, the CB14 is easier to install in wall-mounted boilers, compact mechanical rooms, and packaged HVAC systems where installation space is limited.

Alfa Laval CB10 vs. CB14 — Brazed PHE for Domestic Hot Water & Boiler Applications
Core Difference
Both the CB10 and CB14 are compact brazed plate heat exchangers built with 316L stainless steel plates and copper brazing. They are widely used in HVAC, boiler systems, heat pumps, and general water heating applications where compact size and efficient heat transfer are required.
The main difference is their application focus.
The CB10 is a more general-purpose BPHE commonly used in HVAC systems, small chillers, oil cooling, heat pumps, and standard heating circuits. It performs well under stable operating conditions with moderate flow demand.
The CB14 is more commonly selected for boiler-side hot water systems and domestic hot water (DHW) heating. Compared with the CB10, it supports higher flow rates and is better suited for systems with frequent pump cycling, pressure fluctuation, or possible water hammer conditions.
Construction & Materials
Both models use:
- 316L stainless steel plates
- Copper brazing
- Fully brazed gasket-free construction
- Compact one-piece design
Since there are no gaskets, both units require very little maintenance and are suitable for long-term closed-loop operation.
For installers and maintenance technicians, the compact body also makes them easier to fit into wall-mounted boilers, heat pump modules, and tight mechanical rooms.
Technical Comparison
| Item | CB10 | CB14 |
| Typical Flow Rate | Up to 4.1 m³/h | Up to 8.2 m³/h |
| Typical Application | HVAC / Heat Pump / Cooling | Boiler & Domestic Hot Water |
| Plate Capacity | Up to 20 plates | Up to 14 plates |
| Pressure Resistance | Depends on configuration | Optimized for boiler circuits |
| Water Hammer Resistance | Standard | Better suited for fluctuating systems |
| Fouling Resistance | Good under clean conditions | Better for hard-water heating systems |
| Installation Space | Very compact | Compact |
IIn real boiler projects, the CB14 is often preferred when the system experiences unstable flow conditions or frequent start-stop pump operation. Its flow design is generally more suitable for domestic hot water circulation and boiler-side heating loops.
The CB10, however, remains a very common choice for smaller heating systems, heat pumps, fan coil circuits, and light industrial duties where operating conditions are relatively stable.
Application Recommendations
Choose CB10 for:
- HVAC heating and cooling systems
- Heat pump heat exchange
- Oil cooling and process cooling
- Compact equipment with stable operating conditions
- Small closed-loop circulation systems
Choose CB14 for:
- Residential boiler systems
- Domestic hot water (DHW) heating
- Apartment and building heating loops
- Boiler-side plate heat exchanger replacement
- Systems with pressure fluctuation or water hammer risk
- Areas with relatively hard water
Selection Notes
Neither CB10 nor CB14 is ideal for fluids containing heavy particles, dirty media, or applications requiring frequent manual cleaning. In those cases, a gasketed plate heat exchanger is usually a better choice.
When selecting between these two models, the most important factors are:
- Required flow rate
- Water quality
- Pressure fluctuation inside the system
- Available installation space
- Boiler or heat pump operating conditions
For general HVAC and cooling duties, the CB10 is usually sufficient and cost-effective.
For domestic hot water systems and boiler heating loops — especially where pump cycling or water hammer may occur — the CB14 is typically the safer long-term option.
